Many patients have anxiety or fear when it comes to visiting the dentist. At Wright Dental Center, we don’t take it personally! Our welcoming staff and friendly atmosphere can help you feel at ease when you’re here.
In fact, dental anxiety is more common than you might think. Many patients who come to us express concerns about anxiety, pain and their time in the treatment chair. But postponing care due to fear of the dentist has the potential to cause more serious problems down the line. In fact, postponing dental care can cause systemic infections and lasting harm to your entire body. That’s why Dr. Bo Wright decided to provide our patients with solutions to ensure comfortable, pain-free dentistry at every appointment.
If you need assistance with relaxing during your dental appointment, we offer our patients nitrous oxide. Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a mild sedative medication that helps relieve anxiety and may even produce feelings of elation or euphoria.
We administer nitrous oxide through a mask placed over your nose. We can adjust the level of sedation throughout your appointment to ensure the proper dosage. It leaves your system quickly, so you can drive yourself home from your appointment! Nitrous oxide is so mild and safe that we even use it with our youngest patients during their treatment.
For patients with more extreme dental anxiety or a very strong gag reflex, a stronger form of sedation may be necessary. Oral sedation is medication in pill form that you take before your appointment in our office. Oral sedation is effective in helping patients relax or manage a gag reflex, and even helps with patients who have trouble getting numbed for a procedure.
You will remain conscious during your treatment, but you will be completely relaxed and may even lose your sense of time. This is useful for people who need extensive treatment because your time in the chair will fly by. For patients who have difficulty getting numb, you can be sure that your dental treatment will be pain-free.
Because the medication takes several hours to fully wear off, you will need someone to drive you home from the appointment, and you may feel groggy immediately after treatment.
For certain procedures, including dental implant placement, extractions or other extensive dental treatments, you may wish to have intravenous (IV) sedation so that you can completely relax during treatment and have a procedure free of pain or anxiety. With IV sedation dentistry, you can enjoy the full effects of sedation during your treatment.
Our nurse anesthetist will control your sedation levels throughout your appointment so you feel no stress, fear or anxiety when you have your dental treatment. As with oral sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
Skipping dental care due to anxiety or a dental phobia can have long-term effects on your overall health. Receiving regular dental care can prevent more serious dental issues, but also systemic conditions such as diabetes complications, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.
